Writing

At Phoenix Community Primary School, we believe that writing is a vital tool for communication, creativity, and self-expression. Our English curriculum is designed to ensure that all children develop early and secure literacy skills, with a strong emphasis on rich language development and oracy. Through high-quality discussions, storytelling, and spoken expression, we enable pupils to articulate their ideas clearly before translating them into written form.

Each term, the learning in our classrooms is underpinned by either a high-quality fiction or non-fiction text, ensuring that children engage with exemplary literature that enriches their understanding of language, structure, and creativity. By immersing children in these texts, we expose them to a variety of writing styles, vocabulary, and sentence structures, providing a model for their own writing.

We prioritise reading and phonics, recognising that a secure foundation in these areas is essential for confident, independent writers.

Our writing curriculum fosters creativity, both in the content children produce and in their grammatical and structural choices. We ensure pupils develop a strong command of language, using it effectively to engage and inform their audience.

To support grammatical understanding and sentence structure, we use Language Through Colour across the whole curriculum. This approach provides a consistent and visual method to help pupils build well-structured sentences, develop their confidence in grammar, and enhance their writing fluency.

Additionally, we emphasise the use of subject-specific vocabulary, ensuring that writing is a vehicle for embedding knowledge across the curriculum. This approach supports deeper understanding and enables pupils to communicate their learning effectively in different subjects.

To help children see themselves as writers, we provide opportunities to write for real purposes—whether composing thank-you letters, crafting poems for our local community, or drafting complaint emails. By engaging in meaningful, purposeful writing experiences, pupils develop confidence in their ability to use writing as a tool for real-world communication.

Through this literature-rich, language-focused, and creative approach, we develop confident, articulate, and skilled writers who can express themselves with clarity and purpose.
